In my childhood, I was convinced that human reason could ultimately lead us to the truth. I believed that everything in the world could be understood through intense thought and rational inquiry. It was a time when I knew nothing of human limitations. The ideas of philosophers had profound influence on the way I thought. David Hume argued that human beings can perceive the world only through experience. In contrast, René Descartes regarded reason itself as the source of truth. Both philosophers left a deep impression on me, but the philosopher who influenced me most profoundly was Immanuel Kant. Kant explained that human beings are not merely passive recipients of the world as it is. While he acknowledged the importance of experience, he believed that the human mind interprets experience through the frameworks of time, space, and causality.
